★★★★ 4 Twisted Stars ★★★★
A haunting trio of short stories about love, obsession, and secrets. Each short story is titled after a song, The National's Apartment Story, Placebo's Scared of Girls, and Skunk Anansie's Post Orgasmic Chill.
A lonely married woman nostalgically rekindles a friendship with a former lover and the apartment they shared. Dark secrets and mysteries surround the apartment building and its new tenants that delve deep into the woman's psyche and prove to be fatal.
Scared of Girls
A glamorous go-go dancer and a failing university student are bound by a dark secret that may change their fates forever.
Post Orgasmic Chill
The destinies of a cynical rock star, a groupie, an arrogant DJ, and naïve university student intertwine in a rainy London that serves as the backdrop to their tormented lives. Secrets and lies coincide in this dark tale of love gone wrong.
I was very intrigued by the idea that surround this book – Twisted and morbid tales about seemingly normal people who begin to discover their own dark possibilities. And I have to say that the author certainly delivered! These stories are in fact dark, twisted, and morbid. But they are also a lot of fun if you enjoy these types of stories. So I have to say when I was reading each one of them I was shockingly surprised. In order of my favorites of the three- The Apartment Story, Post Orgasmic Chill, and Scared of Girls.
Apartment Story: This one if my favorite. It tells the twisted story of a woman who rents out her old apartment to a girl who she used to know (and love). When the two talk of reconnecting there seems to be some hope that the loneliness Mary has been feeling for a long time will finally go away. But after moving in Mary never hears from her again… Is it because her old friend chooses not to reconnect? Or is it something more sinister?
Scared of Girls: This one is about two people who are seemingly in love. But one of them is hiding a secret that may destroy their relationship and the person themselves. What I liked about this story is the relationship between the two characters and the fact that this girl was not afraid of girls… the ending was really quite sweet but I was expecting something a bit more morbid. Anyway, the plot behind this story is very good just not as twisted as the other two.
Post Orgasmic Chill: This is my second favorite book of the three. It deals with lies, cheating, and a few other horrible things that I won’t mention because it will spoil the whole story. All I have to say is that each and every character in this one is utterly insane (again, in a good way) and the ending is killer… EEEP!
Overall this is a great book. While I would have liked to see the stories a bit longer (I can see each one being their own full length novel) it doesn’t take away from the stories themselves. Looking to try something new and unique? Then I strongly suggest Doll Parts. You just may love it!
