THE GOOD GIRL BY MARY KUBICA
Standalone. Psychological Thriller
Release Date: July 29, 2014
"I've been following her for the past few days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she works. I don't know the color of her eyes or what they look like when she's scared. But I will."
One night, Mia Dennett enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. At first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.
When Colin decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota instead of delivering her to his employers, Mia's mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them. But no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family's world to shatter.
An addictively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a propulsive debut that reveals how even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems.
The Good Girl by Mary Kubica is a gripping and cleverly crafted psychological thriller with a twist that you won't see coming. Some people have said in the past that this novel is as close to Gone Girl as your essentially going to get without actually rewriting Gone Girl, and I have to say that I agree, somewhat. Perhaps its the sadistic undertone of the characters? The way the plot plays out in the end? I can't put my finger on it, but the gist is close to it. With that being said, I really enjoyed this novel. The chapters are told in alternating point of views and while they aren't told through the main character, Mia, it's easy to get a picture of who she is and everything that surrounds her disappearance. This to me, was a very clever move on the authors part. In addition to this, the chapters are fairly short and it worked well for this book that is fairly long (almost 400 pages). I feel like I whizzed through the book because of it. All in all though, this is an enjoyable psychological thriller that has some major twists and turns. Readers should expect the unexpected when reading it.
