Just Friends by Monica Murphy
Standalone. New Adult Romance.
Release Date: September 13, 2016
Overall Rating: 5 stars
It’s the end of summer. Just before I start senior year with my two best friends in the whole world. Dustin and Emily are everything to me. We’ve been inseparable since middle school, and when we’re together, nothing can go wrong.
But things aren’t always what they seem. Em’s turned into a drunken mess who parties too much. Dustin and I have hooked up a few times—and now he’s ready to take our relationship to the next level. Yet I’m not sure I want things to change. I’m scared if I take it any further with Dustin, our friendship will be ruined forever. Then there’s Ryan. The new guy. He’s hot. He flirts way too much. And Em has totally set her sights on him.
So when my best friend betrays me in the worst possible way, guess who’s there to help me pick up the pieces of my broken heart? Ryan. But he’s so confusing. Annoying. Sweet. Sexy. I want to trust him, yet he makes it so hard. What I really want is for everything to go back to the way it was before.
Before I found out that best friends make the worst kind of enemies.
Keep your friends close… or enter into a total love triangle resulting in many losses of friendship and so much teenage drama that your head will spin!
Just Friends is an absolute WINNER in my eyes. It is filled with teenage angst, a lot of deception, deceit, and totally intoxicating from start to finish. I haven’t read an excellent high school romance novel in ages and I have to say if more were like this book I would be picking up many more. Readers should be forewarned that it doesn’t exactly end when the story finishes. It leaves us kind of hanging because to see what happens with these relationships and so on we have to read the second book (um… I need it NOW). So if you’re okay with this than I highly recommend it. It’s like 90210 in terms of friendships, lovers, the fighting, the drama, the sex, and the loyalty gone wrong. Utter perfection in my eyes and I can only assume that other readers will enjoy this one as much as I did.
Just Friends details the lives of 3 friends who change over a summer and have to live with the mistakes that ultimately brought the friendship down. It’s certainly a coming of age novel and the characters need to make mistakes and learn from them but it also incorporates a pretty intense romance too. Now, this “romance” is shown in quite a few ways and there is a bit of a love triangle, but all of this stays true for the age of the characters. Thinking back to when I was 17 I can certainly relate to the happenings that ensue in this book (although I don’t think I took things as far as they did).
This book, to sum it up, is an intense and utterly captivating story that will leave readers not only craving more but taking a stroll down memory lane. While some may get caught up and/or turned off at the drama of it all, this story makes sense for the character’s age. Readers need to look past this drama in order to fully appreciate the beauty of this story and the lives that are forever changed for these characters. Yea, there were moments where I wanted to slap Em and Ryan, and I did feel that some of the characters were completely self-absorbed and selfish, but I loved it none the less. This is just one of those books that you need to read for yourself… I highly recommend it.
