Keepsake by Sarina Bowen
True North Series #3
Can Standalone -- Interconnected Characters
Release Date: October 25, 2016
There's a first time for everything.
Lark Wainwright used to be fearless. Her life was a series of adventures, each one more exhilarating than the last. But her recent overseas adventure was one too many. Now she’s home and in one piece. Mostly. But her nights are filled with terror.
When her best friend offers her a stay at the orchard in exchange for help at the farmers’ markets, Lark jumps at the chance to spend fall in Vermont. But her nightmares don’t stop. Desperate to keep her fragile state a secret, she relies on the most soft-spoken resident of the Shipley Farm to soothe her when her dreams prove too much.
Zachariah is a survivor, too. It’s been four years since he was tossed aside by the polygamist cult where he grew up. He’s found a peaceful existence on the Shipley’s farm, picking apples and fixing machinery. But getting thrown away by your own people at nineteen leaves a mark on a guy. He doesn’t always know what to make of a world where movie quotes are the primary means of communication. Before hitchhiking to Vermont, he’d never watched TV or spoken on the phone.
Actually, there are a lot of things he’s never done.
Zach and Lark slowly grow to trust one another. One night they become even closer than they’d planned. But Lark may still be too broken to trust anyone. When she pushes Zach away, he will have to prove to himself that he's good for much more than farm labor.
Keepsake is another beautiful hit in Sarina Bowens True North series. When I first heard that she was writing Zach his own story, I was super excited! He is after all, the strong silent type. He doesn't let a lot of people in due to his past, so learning anything about him in previous books was pretty much moot. So now that I have finally gotten a closer look at this character, I can honestly say that I am in love. He is pure perfection. He is kind, generous, and a bit shy, but such a strong and capable man that it would be hard not to love him despite all the horrible things he endured as a child. Lark, the stories heroine, is equally as loveable, although she too had some traumatic experiences in her past. But what is born out of trauma comes a light that neither saw coming... And they both have to decide whether it will be easier to let go, or hold on tight.
This book incorporates many things that I love in a good romance. First, a strong and willing hero that goes after what he wants. He may be the type to sit back and wait (but c'mon, this is so endearing) but he never forgets to claim his prize at the end. Another thing I loved about this book is the setting. Set in a small town in Vermont (on a farm no less -- I love farmers), readers get a sense of closeness and a tightknit community where everyone cares about those around them. This is probably one of my favorite things about this book, and the Shipley's kindness touches my heart. Finally, this book has just enough drama to make it interesting, but not too much that it turns readers off. Sure, both Lark and Zach have had some tough times in their lives, but they are able to grow from them.
Overall, I adored this book. Zach is probably my favorite hero of the series (although Griff from book #1 is very close to it). I enjoyed learning about Lark and her experiences as well, but she isn't my favorite of all the heroines in this series (Aubrey takes the lead). This could partially be due to the fact that both characters has a lot going on in their lives, and then partially because she almost made a huge mistake in letting a certain someone go.... I mean, how can ANYONE let Zach go??? No matter what though, this is a fantastic book and I am go glad to have finally met Zach. Now I have high hopes that Sarina Bowen will give Mia a story. I would really love this!!!
