Release Date: May 12, 2015
whose sharp edges and cutthroat ambition have been protecting a scandalous truth, and a heart that's bigger than it first appears.
The question remains: will breaking her silence destroy all that she has worked for—or, will it at long last, set Ani free?
This is definitely one of those books that will stay with you for a while. WOAH. Mind boggled. It’s pretty dark, twisted, and tragic to be honest and all the stuff that went down (towards the end) where extremely unexpected. With that being said, I did enjoy this novel. However, I feel like the book totally veered off from the story that was being told and went into a different direction halfway through. While this may be a bit confusing (and dramatic) for some readers, I have to admit I liked the story a lot better after this. Of course everything that went down was tragic (I won’t say what because it will spoil the story) but it just something to the story that was definitely lacking towards the beginning.
The story overflows with some serious emotion. I was utterly heartbroken in some moments, I cringed in others, and I wanted to slap Ani in other instances. She starts off as a girl who literally puts popularity over her own safety- even when bad things happen to her. She doesn’t stick up for herself, she allows others to essentially use and abuse her, and she doesn’t seem to have a lot of morals as a teenager. Switching back and forth though a “dual point of view” from her teenage years and adulthood, readers can see a subtle change in her character; although she is still a bit whacked even in adulthood. Did I like Ani? Yes, I did. She is one of those characters that you can’t help connect with even though you don’t like the choices she made. As far as the story goes, I enjoyed it too. I found everything about it to be quite unique, and I couldn’t help but be enthralled in it all the way through. I actually read 80% of the novel in one day because I needed to know where it was going to go.
Readers who are looking for a unique read with some really dark and twisted moments should definitely pick up this book. Having been really excited to read this, I can honestly say that it didn’t let me down in the slightest, even though I didn’t think it would pick up at all. However, give it a chance even if it seems a little slow at first because once you get to where the story takes off you will probably be just as hooked as I was!
