“My guardian angel is a drunk.”
Evelyn Casey's life is at a standstill. She's in her mid-twenties, struggling with the dating scene in San Francisco. Nothing seems to be working out, and she’s starting to think that she’ll live out her days in her crummy apartment with her overbearing roommate, Brooklyn. It's absurd, but sometimes Evey longs for a guardian angel to show up and save the day.
And then he does. Seriously. His name is Lucian and he's a guardian angel, been on the job for two thousand years. His sudden presence in her life is both good—he's brilliant, witty, and warm—and bad—he's brilliant, witty, warm, and hot as ----. But as perfect as Lucian seems, he’s got problems of his own. He’s taken up drinking and he’s brazenly inserted himself into Evey’s life, going against the greatest cosmic law ever created.
For Evey, the rules are simple: You are not allowed to hook up with your guardian angel. But sometimes fulfilling your destiny requires a leap of faith, a confrontation with God.
Yes, God as in God.
Lucian Divine is one of the most unique romances that I have read in a long time. Renee Carlino mixes the paranormal with an epic tale of soulmates that will leave you not only shedding tears but believing that everything that this book depicts is real. Normally, I try and stay away from books where religion plays a big part in the storyline; this one for instance mentions god, the afterlife, and guardian angels, but is don’t subtly in this novel so I had no problem reading it. The biggest aspect of religion here really is the fact that our hero is a guardian angel. And in all honesty? It works. With that being said, if you’re looking to preorder any book in 2017, this is it.
Now, since I am giving my honest view/opinion of the book, I have to say what didn’t really work for me. First, some of the story was a bit farfetched to me and at times, I felt like everything was going so fast that I couldn’t keep up. They “meet” (not in the conventional way that humans do), they fall instantly in love, and get married. Things start to go wrong in their lives as they are not a normal human couple, but an almost mixed species trying to make it work. Tragedies ensue, important pieces of their souls begin to disintegrate, and everything goes black. All of this happens in a very short time span and left me wondering if I missed something important. HOWEVER, the ending really changed my mind about the whole book and I honestly felt touched (maybe even some butterflies). Renee turned an almost mundane story into something wonderful with the way she wrapped everything up in the end, and I commend her for it. If you want to know what I mean you should read the story yourself.
Overall, this is well written and impressive novel that takes paranormal to a whole new level. The author uses her imagination and sparks a whole lot of interest in the tale of a guardian angel and the woman he falls in love with. I have personally never read a book like this before which made it more special to me as a reader. It gets very tiresome to read the same plot line over and over again, and because this book is so different it’s like a breath of fresh air. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely.
