In Fallen Heir, readers finally get a deeper look at Easton Royal- someone who definitely caught my eye in the first three books in the series. Easton is your typical bad boy. He drinks, fights, sleeps around, and doesn't take responsibility for his actions. This is as expected from what we have learned about him in the other books so I can't say that I was totally surprised at his behavior. Although I will admit, it would have been nice to see a little bit of character growth in this one, something that sadly wasn't delivered. Ultimately, I liked Easton in this book, but I didn't love him. There just seemed to be something missing in the story for him, and I didn't feel as connected as I would have hoped. Maybe it's because his behavior is so juvenile? I don't know and I can't pinpoint it exactly, but that is really what made me go to a 4 star instead of 5 star rating,
In addition to this being Easton's story, we meet Hartley. Hartley is a good girl- she is focused on school, has no intention of letting Easton walk all over her heart, and would rather stay under the radar than become the next big thing at school. Underneath all of this though, we see a sadness in Hartley that comes from basically being disowned by her parents. I won't say why because that's something you can read for yourself, and because frankly, we don't quite get all the answers we would hope for out of this book.
Despite their differences though, Hartley and Easton develop a deep friendship- something he hopes will turn into more. But things from the past come back to haunt them and what could have been the start to something good goes down in flames... Almost literally.
Readers need to be aware that this book ends in a BIG CLIFFHANGER. I don't know know WHY the authors did this, but I can tell you I was PISSED when it came to the "ending". First, it's just pure craziness and I wanted to throw my iPad across the room. Do I really HAVE to wait until January to see what happens? WHY WHY!!!!! You're not going to like this cliffy either... It's feckin UGLY. And sad. Ugh!
Overall, this is a nice addition to the series, but I hope to see more growth in the future for Easton as right now, he is very childish. I also hope that all the crap that happened at the end of this one doesn't turn into someone I won't like... Grrr..
