Genre: Young Adult Romance. Social Issues. Abuse.
This book depressed the hell out of me! Emotional abuse is a hard thing to "watch" and seeing Grace go through it in this book gutted me. I mean, how many people have been in similar situations as her? I can guess that about 1 in 3 have been through some form of this emotional abuse in their life- and that's really sad. With that, the author does a tremendous job at bringing this real life issue into focus for her readers. If you haven't been thinking about these issues prior to reading it then I can guarantee that you will after. This is a sad book- emotionally draining for readers- but so important in the grand scheme of things. I think mothers and daughters should grab a copy of this book. It's an important one for everyone.
Bad Romance is exactly as the title describes- a book about a bad *abusive* romance. Grace has fallen hopelessly in love with Gavin even though he is the stereotypical bad boy with "issues". Looking past of of this, the two embark on a whirlwind love. He is always there for her when she needs a shoulder to cry on because her family treats her terribly. She is there for him as a woman he can have by his side and possess. She knows his treatment of her his a bit over the top, but how can she not love someone that would LITERALLY die for her? So she pushes on even though all the red flags are flying and her friends tell her their relationship is unhealthy. But when is enough ACTUALLY enough? When she starts to fear that his words will turn into fists? Or when she starts to see how it is to have a HEALTHY relationship like the one she develops with her friend, Gideon? You'll have to read to find out...
As I mentioned before, the issues in this book are important . I think many should read it especially young adults themselves so they can understand that being treated this way is NOT okay. This goes for adults too. However, there were two things about this book that grated on my nerves a little bit. The first thing is the fact that SHE WOULDN'T LEAVE HIM. I know, I know. It's harder than that. It's easier to give advise then take it and yada yada yada. However, this crap when on for a year! I wanted to reach into the book and strangle Grace! Another thing I didn't care for is the way the story was TOLD. It kind of felt like a long letter to Gavin even though it wasn't written this way. I just thought it was sort of weird.. Other than this, I clearly enjoyed the book (giving it a 4 star rating even though a couple of things bugged me) and would recommend it to fellow readers.
