is good at reading between the lines. Beneath his prickly façade, Thomas is lonely, and Layla wants to know why. Obsessively. Sometimes you do get what you want. Sometimes you end up in the storage room of a bar with your professor and you kiss him. Sometimes he kisses you back like the world is ending and he will never get to kiss you again. He kisses you until you forget the years of unrequited love; you forget all the rules, and you dare to reach for something that is not yours. Book TeasersRead my Book ReviewRelease Date: July 13, 2017 Genre: Forbidden Romance (student/teacher) The Unrequited is a forbidden romance that is going to make readers second guess their own stances on cheating and forbidden love. While not categorized as a dark romance, it FELT darker as well. This is probably due to the characters themselves as they are not the typical hero and heroine that you see in many romances. For one, Layla is very reclusive. She starts the story by telling us how she "raped" her step-brother and is essentially unloved by her family because of it. The only time she really goes out (besides going to class) is at nighttime and when she does, she ends up becoming a stalker (a little weird, but it works). Following one of her excursions, she finds someone whose soul comes off as dark as hers and this ultimately lead to this forbidden and erotic love that she has with her professor. Woah! This book took me on a journey- one that I wasn't expecting and one that I would have thought I wouldn't like! But I did. I did like this book even though it breaks all the codes of romance novels. There is cheating. There is a forbidden relationship between a student and her teacher. And there is a lot of darkness exuding from both Layla and Thomas. But that's not all the book encompasses. This book also deals with serious issues that effect thousands of women every day- postpartum depression. This is not the forefront of the story and it is only skimmed though in the book, but I think it adds to the uniqueness of the characters as it effects them in many ways. Had this not been a part of the story, I wouldn't have liked it. As previously mentioned, Layla is a bit of a darker soul. But she is also unique, unapologetic, and multilayered. She is a hard women to connect with, but someone that stands out. She has many flaws, but also a deep understanding of who she is and doesn't hide it. There are many readers who won't like or understand her, but I think it's for these reasons that I DID like her. Thomas is the professor. He is the type of man that comes off as unlovable, even though he has such a strong heart. He is deeply battered and broken (you can understand why by reading the story), and comes off as uncaring, arrogant, and mean. And the worst thing about him? He cheats. Now, I won't necessarily say that I LIKE that he cheated, but I can understand WHY. Many readers will be unable to look past this. I completely understand. But if your looking to try something new where the characters don't shit out butterflies and rainbows then this would be the book to try. You will have a hard time both liking and hating the characters, that's for sure. But I am glad I took a chance one something I wouldn't normally read because it made the book feel more realistic in terms of the world we are living in today (especially if one thinks about how some relationships and dating really is). Overall, I did like this story. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it or feel unimpressed by it. In fact, even though the characters are distasteful, I became addicted to them. This story, once again, is certainly not for everyone. There is cheating, there is a lot of sex, and there is some weird stuff going on (in terms of character behavior). But the book is well written and enthralling. I couldn't put it down. ★★★★
