This title for this book stands out in a way that will make readers believe that it's going to be a freaky tale that is going to scare us. Unfortunately, the title and the blurb don't compare to what is actually inside the book and I found myself feeling a bit let down. There were some brutal scenes that made me cringe and there were moments that did make my heart race out of fear of what was going to happen. But most of these moments were quickly overshadowed by the romantic aspect of the book that felt out of place. These scary moments were too few and far in between the coming of age and romance between Ollie and Makani. Had the author strictly stuck to a teen scream novel and focused more on the killings within this small town I probably would have liked it more. However, there wasn't enough spookiness to keep me interested or wanting to continue reading long into the night.
Now, while the book wasn't a favorite of mine, I did like some of it (hence the reason I gave it three stars). For instance, the authors writing style is wonderful. She did a great job at setting the scenes and describing the setting so I felt like I was placed into the small town with the characters. Additionally, when the murders DID occur, there were moments that had me biting my nails in anticipation. I wished these characters could have got away, I wish they could have fought back and done some damage themselves, but their demise was imminent and it set me on the edge of my seat. Finally, the romance between Makani and Ollie was great, even though it was severely misplaced in the book. I liked how two troubled souls found love and how their relationship grew throughout the novel.
If you're looking for a quick read with lots of blood and gore then this may be a great pick for you. I'm glad I read it before Halloween as it fits in well with the season and I think many will agree with me. However, if you're looking for something that is going to keep you up all night in fear, I'm afraid this book will not do that. So you choose whether this would be the right book for you.
